Some Possible Topics:
- Analyze the importance of one or a few (no more
than three) minor characters from a drama. Do they appear to
parallel the major characters in some way, either as double or
shadow? For instance, what is Sancho Panza's role in Don
Quixote?
- Identify a type of character who appears in several
drama and consider what function that character performs? Does the
nature of the character change? Why? Some terms you might encounter
here are: alazon, the imposter or self-deceiving
braggart; eiron, self-derogatory and often
understating; bomolochos, the buffoon or comic
clown; agroikos, the rustic who is easily deceived;
the clever servant, who conspires with the master;
the stupid gull, who gets taken advantage of; man
of few words, who usually follows a stoic code of honor; the
alienated intellectual; the miles gloriosus,
the braggart soldier; the disguised romantic heroine;
the melancholy man; the loquacious old
counselor; the female servant-confidante;
the fainting heroine; the unscrupulous
priest; and the faithful servant.
