bernarda 10 piedi
HOW TO BUILD A "BERNARDA 10-foot" IN YOUR LIVING ROOM
AT 400 m height and 30 km from the sea

an incomparable experience
LAST UPGRADES
Sunday may 23rd 2004 , the improvements have been made:
new floating benches , new sheet block point to get more free space in the narrow cockpit, rigid reinforcement for the sail corner .
here are new bench and cockpit
and here's the sail reinforcement
and an agricultural sailing test
It's clear I'm not quite satisfied :I think I've to make a larger sail , adding at least one sq meter surface .
So I must make a longer gaff too.
See you later
"Later " has already arrived : july 3rd , the super-sized sail is made
sewing it
the sail is made out of a miraculous fabric given to me for free by a motorbike repair man. The miracle is mainly the fact I paid nothing for it.
Here is my BERNARDA 10' under more than six sq.mters of shining white sail!
the ratio Av/Lwl^2 resulting 6,2mq/(2.75^2) = 0,82 !! is extraordinarily high . It means just one thing:
NOW SHE MUST SAIL FASTER !
Now I only need to increase the daggerboard surface, print the class logo on the sail and then compete in regattas all arond the world.
A new fantastic upgrade : july 7th 2004 , the daggerboard is lenghthened 25 cm .
the daggerboard has been zigzag sawn in order to increase the glued area . The cut accuracy is digusting like all works made by me. Somewhere ther is a 5 mm gap filled with epoxy resin and you can see the other side world in transparency. In order to psych out the sailing purists.
This shot of july 17th ,even if from very far, captures an historic event: the first (and probably the last) boat trip with my delightful wife!!
New unexpected modification: august 6th 2004 , new jib , 1.7 sq.m area.
the jib and its wooden bowsprit give her a look like a 19th century schooner. They have been built to pay the due attention to one of my office colleagues who every day was harping on about it.
august 7 : first life day for the new jib.
I say this because I'm a little afraid for a so large sail area fitted to so a weak gaff and mast. I think one day I'll hear a big crash and see anything broken!
The sail ratio now is : 7,9mq/(2.75^2) = 1,045!!
FRIGHTFUL . The boat now sould capsize also without any wind breath!
Here's the evidence: in a total wind absence she runs ! Notice a small water splash under the bow
and notice I am going to overpass a powerful 580 catamaran!
Thank to all the guys who freely shared their knowledges and experiences .
And a very special thank to my splendid wife who allowed me to make havoc of our living room as can see in these pages.
