Coqui
(Eleuterodactylus jasperii)
This is the coqui. It is one
of the most famous representative animal of Puerto Rico, but
it is in danger of becoming
extinct. As industrialization continues, there are fewer and fewer
coquis each day. There are several programs, such as the "Project
Coqui", which has as purpose to prevent its extinction. Until
several years ago, it only existed in Puerto Rico. But, with the
emigration of some PuertoRicans to the island of Hawaii, it has
too moved there. Even when coquis are considered in Puerto Rico
endangered species, in Hawaii they are considered plagues because
of the sound they make "co-kee". If something is not
done to prevent contnued disminution, it will cease to exist. |
