Flora and fauna

Flora of Novosibirsk region doesn't differ too much from that of Middle Europe, though there are some particular Siberian species. On the whole there are 1200 species of plants. Plant cover is very varied. In the North there is swamped dark coniferous taiga which consists of cedars, fir-trees and silver-firs. Here also a lot of moss, lichen, ledum, fern, cowberries and crowberries can be found. To the South birch-trees, pines and aspens begin to prevail. Forest - steppe landscape is typical for region, fields go in turn with little forests called kolcki.

Here one can find a lot of herbs such as St John's wort, milfoil, lungwort. In Barabinsk Steppe there are a lot of wet meadows and swamps with reed, cane and other plants. Kulundinskaya Steppe begins in the south- west of region. The characteristic plants her are wormwood, . Novosibirsk region is rich in pine forests stretching along the river Ob. In forests a lot of mushrooms and berries grow.

Fauna of the region resembles that of Middle and North Europe but there are also some significant differences. The taiga and steppe zones are only 200 km from each other so one can find species peculiar to the north as well as to the south. There are about 80 species of mammals in the region, such mice gophers, hedgehogs, moles, bats, squirrels. the banks of small rivers beavers live.

In the north forests there are foxes, wolves, sables, reindeers, elks, a few bears. In rivers and lakes of our region 30 species of fish are found, sturgeon, starlet, eel-pot, pike, perch, carp and others. There are not many amphibians and reptiles: three species of frogs, two of trots, triton, grass snake and adder. There are about three hundred species of birds. Such variety is explained by great number of small rivers, lakes, swamps.

For description of species and two photos we used a book: Bannikov A.F. Phlint V.E. My dolzhny ih spasti. M. Mysl, 1982. Other photos were taken by students at the nature museum
