Pelican
(Pelecanus ohocrotalus)

Distribution

Pelican is distributed in Pakistan, North-East Africa, Kazakhstan, Russia. In Russia they appear only in spring and leave for warmer countries in autumn.

Description

Pelican is a rather large bird, weighs 10-11 kg. Wings are 70 cm. Feathers are white with pink shading. Young birds are white and get pink shading only at the age of 3 years.

Behaviour

Pelicans live in large groups (colonies), near water supplies, nests are very close to each other. Nest are large and complicated. Laying is 2 eggs, male birds sometimes help to hatch. Parents bring food for nestlings in a beak. Pelicans eat fish. Usually they go fishing in large groups, beat the water with wings and make a great noise. First 2-3 years of life pelicans don’t make nests.
